Are lizards taking over your home and creating a nuisance as a result? Don’t worry, we’ve got the right tips to help you rid your home off them. For some, seeing lizards in their home is usual and doesn’t really cause any bother; but for others, just the sight of them can make them squeamish.
To be fair, lizards help out by eating certain common insects like flies, spiders, fruit flies, and even mosquitoes. But hey, if you don’t like them in your living space, here are some simple ways to get rid of lizards in your home.

Get a Cat
Just as many of us get dogs to deter intruders or serve as an animate “alarm”, you can simply get a cat to deter lizards in your home. Cats are predators to lizards, and they love a good chase when given the right circumstance. They are natural instinctive hunting creatures that can drastically reduce or help rid your home of lizards.
However, you might be visiting the veterinary much often with this option as lizards carry parasites – liver flukes – that can cause harm to your cat or even kill it. So maybe, using one of the other methods listed below would be much more suitable.
Commonly known as camphor in this region, mothballs can really help with getting rid of lizards. Due to the “toxic” gas they emit, they are great repellents for lizards. You can simply place them in your wardrobes, in and around the kitchen (away from food), and in cabinets, to prevent lizards from accessing these spaces.
Eggshells Can Do Magic
Eggshells emit sulfur smells that cause a burning sensation in the stomach of lizards. Put them in strategic places where you’ve seen lizards most. This creates a strong deter for them rendering your home lizard-free. Apparently, this is a popular practice. Its potency must be the reason.
Shallot is a type of onion but slender in shape, milder in smell with a little stench of garlic. When chopped or minced, and placed in a location where lizards frequent, the pungent smell wards off all lizards.
Try to Always Cover Your Cooked Foods and Leftovers
Besides trying to avoid lizards in your living space, leaving your cooked foods or leftovers uncovered over a long period is unhygienic, and can cause harm to your health. Uncovered food attracts lizards, and helps create a receptive environment for them.
Uncovered foods and leftovers also attract cockroaches, flies, and ants, which in turn attract lizards because they feed on insects. To avoid this, store leftovers neatly covered, try as much as possible to wash your pots and pans after cooking, and keep your kitchen bin covered and as tidy as possible.
Make a Lemon, Vinegar, and Chili Powder Mixture
Lizards hate the smell of lemon, vinegar, and chili powder. Imagine them mixed together, that gets you a very potent home remedy against lizards. Making the mixture is very easy. Mix powdered chili pepper with lemon juice. Stir thoroughly. Add vinegar, and continue to stir until you get a fine-coarse texture. Pour the mixture into a spray container. Now you can squirt it in places where lizards frequent to ward them off.
Kill Them With Coffee and Tobacco
Tobacco is poisonous to lizards and averts them, but when mixed with instant coffee, you get the perfect coy to lure lizards and kill them. Simply mix loose tobacco with powdered coffee. Deposit the mixture in strategic places around the house. The flavour of the mixture will lure the lizards, and once they consume it, they will die because of the tobacco toxicity to them.
Use Rodent Glue Trap
Rodent glue can be very effective against lizards by trapping them. Rodent glue or glue trap as many call it, comes in many forms. It can be a metal, wood, or paper smeared with non drying adhesive or glue. When placed in places lizards frequent in your home, you can trap many lizards and dispose of them. Kindly note to dispose of them as quickly as possible to avoid any reek the dead lizards may emit after a while.
