Insects, pests and rodents are not only a nuisance but can pose health problems to individuals in the home. After investing considerable effort and money in your home or apartment for rent, playing host to bugs, insects, pests and rodents might be one task you are not ready for. Here is how to keep the unwanted guests away.

Seal cracks and gaps

Pests can enter your home through cracks and gaps and the best way to prevent them from coming in, is shutting them out. Check both the interior and exterior of the house for any gaps that could be possible entry points for pests. Check the entire apartment for cracks, not forgetting the area beneath sinks and pipes.  If any exist, carefully seal them to keep all pests away.

Do proper cleaning

It’s undeniable that house cleaning is exhausting and not necessarily anyone’s favourite chore. However, having a pest problem is more upsetting and exhausting than any form of cleaning. Remember not to rush through house cleaning. Conduct a thorough cleaning exercise ensuring that every nook and cranny is too clean for pests to stay.

Repair broken doors and windows

These creepy crawlies can wiggle through any space to set up shop in your home. Inspect your doors and windows regularly to see if any are broken or just don’t sit right and have them repaired. You can also use netting for doors and windows  if you want to enjoy fresh air without attracting pests. Experts say that the ideal screen netting has about 200 holes per square inch.

Fix leaky taps and faucets

Moist environment are conducive for insects and pests to thrive. To banish them and make your home unattractive to these worrisome intruders, fix all leaky taps and faucets. Check all pipes to ensure there are no leaks. Also check behind refrigerators and sinks for any leakages and keep them dry and clean.

Store garbage in sealed containers

Home trash provides the perfect breeding grounds for insects like ants and cockroaches. Make sure all your bins have tightly fitted lids and are well lined with disposable material to avoid any spills into the bin itself. Dispose of rubbish regularly especially kitchen garbage since its advisable not to keep it overnight. Also wash bins and covers regularly to cater for any spills that may breed pests.

Maintain plants, shrubbery and lawns

Some pests are peculiar to greenery. If you keep a garden, keep your plants well-trimmed and your lawns mowed. Your mower and shears should be put to good use if you want to prevent a pest invasion. Plants like citronella are known to ward off pests with their smell, for pest control purposes, you can plant one in your garden.

Purchase bug sprays and treatments

Because pests are stubborn and some of the most cumbersome creatures to deal with, some might find their way into your home no matter how hard you try to  keep them off. For those ones, it’s time to launch a clear offensive. After all, they clearly violated the security mechanism you put in your home to keep them out. Bug spray, mice traps, insecticides and pesticides are equally capable of eliminating the enemy.

Getting rid of pests and bugs enables you to enjoy the comfort that the home offers. Whether your invaders are small or big, with these tips your home should be a strong fortress, solid enough to keep the crawling enemies out.
