We have all enjoyed the fireworks, countdowns, and some used this holiday season to observe religious traditions and crossover services….
Do you have an extra room in your house? Many times when people are looking for a home to rent or buy, they aim to have a little more space than needed because it tends to come in handy even when we can’t think of an immediate use at the time. Obviously it’s a sweet “problem” to have that can have tons of creative solutions. If you have the extra room/space but it’s just collecting dust and clutter, here are 12 remarkable suggestions for transforming it into a room you adore.
What’s even better than a walk-in closet? A whole room for your funky fresh collection of clothes, shoes, bags and fashion accessories. If you are a bonafide fashionista, then there never seems to be enough space in your room for your stuff. Somehow they always seem cramped in that small closet or end up in a heap on the floor or bed. Call in a carpenter and design your very own closet room, complete with an accessories island a flat surface for jewellery and perfumes with drawers on all 4 sides for socks, belts, ties, etc) and additional closets with hanging bars. Mirrors on all four walls? Why not?!
You like colour. You like shapes. You like interesting textures and eclectic materials. You follow Martha Stewart on Instagram and now you can have your own space to express your creativity! Convert the extra room into an artsy studio to call your own. Have a brightly coloured accent wall and even some cool wallpaper. Put in multiple work spaces and organisation bins for your materials and supplies. If you are into painting, you can set up for easels, maybe overlooking the outdoors for inspiration.
Some people don’t believe in bringing work home but if you must or you work for yourself, then it is worth having a dedicated room for business or project work. Your home office doesn’t have to be stuffy and boring though. Of course it needs to have the efficiency basics like a solid desk, nice cushioned chair and even a printer-scanner-copier. Put up a cork/white board to pin or note your ideas and to-do’s with a marker. Throw in some family photos on the wall and some fresh plants and you will love to get productive in this space.
It’s a digital world now so some are fine having hundreds of books on an e-reader, but the true book lover enjoys turning a paper page and being surrounded by the paperbacks and hardcover books that educate, entertain and inspire them. Call in a carpenter to build some lovely ceiling-to-floor bookshelves. Install some decorative lighting and buy a super comfy armchair to snuggle into when you read. Get a lamp too. Add in colour and texture to give the room some personality.
Forget that small shelf in your kitchen cabinet stashing your booze. Take your flair for good libations to another level with a whole room to honour your tastes. Create a nicely lit bar wall with shelves displaying your various liquors – whisky, gins, brandy, vodkas, wines – on different shelves. You can even have a special shelf for made-in-Ghana beers and bitters. Your refrigerator can be neatly tucked away behind the bar. If you are a big lover of particular brands like Guinness, you can have some of their paraphernalia like a branded towel or jugs up on the walls and on tables. Display tumblers, shakers, wine glasses and shot glasses creatively to add to the theme of the room. Get some bar stools for walk-ups and create a nice seating area for when you are splitting a bottle with guests.
This is an exciting one especially for the men. If you live with a women, it’s possible your home has a stronger feminine feel or you just feel like you want to retreat into your own space sometimes. Here’s your chance to have all the tangled wires, multiple remote controls, surround sound speakers and game consoles sans any complaints. Put up a nice big flatscreen tv and also have a few sofas for your playful guests. You’ll need a center table for snacks – ideally one that has a lower tier to store away video games, board games and card games. An ottoman is also a great addition for storage and feet-up comfort.
If you already have all the nominated Oscar movies and want to enjoy them in a theatre-like environment you don’t have to pay for, this idea is for you. Watching a film from a laptop is unheard of. You want the full effect of feeling like you’re a character in the movie and with a few rows of seating or 2 fluffy L-shaped couch seats you can have just that. Ensure comfort with plenty of toss pillows and fluffy carpeting. Of course the star of the room is the screen so go for one that is at least 80” and install in-ceiling surround sound.
Perhaps you grew up playing the piano or guitar and yet as an adult you’ve completely done away with using your instruments. Rekindle your passion for music with a music room. Whatever your instrument is, give it a spotlight in the extra room and put up inspiration in art and words that make you feel engulfed in your talent. If you are more into beats and sound engineering you’ll need to set up an equalizer. Make it comfortable so you can practice and very important, ensure good soundproofing so everyone else in the house and neighbourhood is kept happy.
This is a great idea for families with little kids. As much as you try to stay organized, somehow their toys and books end up on the floors in the living room, hallways and even unexpected places. No more! With a room set up just for them, you can better teach them responsibility and organization. Have nice, brightly painted walls and cute wall decals as well as carpets to prevent harm during falls. Here you can have shelves and bins for all toys and books and even a FREEDOM WALL where they can scribble with markers and crayons to their heart’s delight. This is the fun zone where their friends can visit as well.
Ahhhhh….Just thinking about this makes you want to get a massage. If you have the space, why not create a calm and relaxing haven where you can enjoy peaceful spa services in the comfort of your own home. You can go as far as you want to with this idea but even a basic massage table with a cabinet for towels, body oils and lotions and potted plants, is a good start. Get some scented candles or incense for aromatherapy and even a sound system to play relaxing music whenever you are in there. Go the extra mile with a small fountain or water wall. With this you have the perfect excuse to invite over a professional masseuse every other month or so.
It’s okay to do your squats and lunges right by your bedside but if you have an extra room and are into fitness, this could be your chance to create an entire room for your workouts. Don’t worry about having to spend thousands on equipment if you are not up to it. A mirrored wall, a few varying dumbbells, some bins for exercise mats, skipping ropes, and the corner for your exercise ball is all you need. You can kick things up a notch with a cabinet for towels and water. If you have a treadmill, then stick it in here, perhaps with a TV where you can work out to your favourite exercise videos.
This is the most basic use for a spare room. Gone are college days when you made your friends and family spend the night on the living room couch. Show some hospitality to your visitors with a gorgeous space that will make them feel welcome and at home. It does not need to be fancy. A nice queen-size bed with clean bedding and pillows, a rug, some side tables with a lamp and closet space for their belongings is enough. Of course you can spruce things up with wall art and other interior design.
