Spotlight Series: Adenta

When buying or renting a property, location is key. It is important to know as much about each neighborhood as possible, so that you can make an informed decision about where you would like to live.

As part of its Spotlight series, Jumia House provides additional information for house-hunters about each neighbourhood in Accra. Today, we put the spotlight on Adenta.

Adenta is one of the newest residential areas, located in the eastern part of the Greater Accra Region. It is bordered by Madina, Ashiyie, Ashale Botwe, Kantamanso, Oyarifa and Abokobi.

Properties

Bare or undeveloped lands are moderately priced in this area, which has led many people to acquire land and construct buildings here. Prices of houses in Adenta also vary, catering for people searching for both high- and low-end properties. Adenta also has properties available for rent, which are mostly “self-contained” or “chamber and hall.’

In comparison to certain parts of Accra, Adenta has a smaller number of apartments on offer. The most popular of these are the Adenta Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) Flats, which provide housing to workers living in Accra.

Commercial Activities

A number of residents operate smaller retail shops but the Adenta Shopping Mall is the most popular. The mall also serves as one of the best hangouts for people living in and around Adenta. Located near Housing Down, it contains a variety of departmental stores, offices, hair salons and restaurants.

Beige Capital is a financial institution which has set up its head office in Adenta. Other financial institutions in this vicinity include the National Investment Banks, GCB Bank and the United Bank for Africa.

Transportation

Due to its high population, a lot of public transport is available along the Adenta – Accra route. Adenta’s proximity to Madina makes it easy for residents and commuters to reach their destination. A few years ago, traveling to and from Adenta was quite difficult but the traffic situation has improved immensely, due to the construction of the dual carriageway that connects Adenta to Legon.

Schools

Located at Adenta Frafraha is the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research – Animal Research Institute, an educational facility which specializes in the research and development of both domestic and wild life resources. Through the institute’s research, technologies have been produced to provide feed and forages for domestic farm animals.

One of the oldest senior high schools in the Accra region is the West Africa Senior High School, located near the Adenta Barrier. It is a co-educational institution, which offers courses in science, general arts, business, visual arts and agricultural science. Primary and junior high schools in the neighbourhood are: De younsters School, Golden Sun Beam, Victory Presby Church School and Adenta Community School.

Security

Naturally, Adenta is a serene neighbourhood due to its proximity to the Akwapim Mountains. The cool mountain air gives dwellers a peaceful atmosphere, while the Ghana Police provides them with security. The establishment of the Adenta Police Station has reduced the crime rates in the vicinity drastically. There is also a fire station in the neighbourhood.
