Accra is the capital city of Ghana. It is populous and home several businesses, embassies, and hotels among others. These activities and businesses operated in Accra attract people to the capital both from rural areas and outside of the country (expatriates).
Finding the perfect place to live in the capital can be challenging especially with the several options to choose from. One criterion to use when selecting a neighbourhood should be its safety. How is safe is the area? Is there a responsive police service? What else can be considered when selecting a neighbourhood? meQasa Ghana has compiled five of the safest neighbourhoods in the capital.
With its close proximity to one of the most popular police stations, Airport Residential is one of the safest neighbourhoods to live in Accra. It is attractive to expatriates because of its serenity and clear atmosphere except for the occasional flight of aeroplanes. This neighbourhood as the name depicts is close to Kotoka International Airport. It has its fair share of businesses with popular hotels like the African Regent, Airport View, Holiday Inn and Best Western Premier Hotel. It also has two of the biggest malls in Accra – Accra and Marina Malls. Properties in this neighbourhood are a little on the high side but they appreciate in value over time and are also safe.
With properties prices on the moderate side, Achimota is home to several young professionals. It is also one of the safest places to reside due to the presence and activities of the Ghana Police Service. There is a large police station near the Achimota School who ensure residents are safe and traffic regulations are adhered to. Commuting from Achimota to other parts of Accra is easy because of the construction of the highway. There are several schools in this area including the Achimota School. Police patrols and barricades are quite common in this neighbourhood.
About 14 kilometers north east of the city centre, East Legon is plush. It also has a large police station which is responsive to the call of residents whenever the need arises. East Legon has beautiful properties with a chain of restaurants on the Lagos Avenue. The Mensvic Hotel is a popular landmark in this area. Several educational institutions like Knutsford and Islamic Universities are in this vicinity. The University of Ghana is a few kilometres away from East Legon.
Located on the eastern part of Accra, Cantonments is one of the safest places to live in Accra. Like Airport, it has one of the most responsive police services which ensure the neighborhood is safe and traffic regulations are strictly adhered to. Cantonments is also one of the plushest suburbs. It is a planned neighborhood which dates back to the colonial era. Most of the old architecture is giving way to more modern ones. Apart from its serenity, Cantonments also has very good schools both at the primary and secondary level like the Morning Star School Limited and Saint Thomas Aquinas Senior High School. The American Embassy is also in this neighborhood.
Located on the La Road, the Osu Police Station is one of the most active in Accra. Osu has a vibrant nightlife activity making it an attractive neighborhood for expatriates.
