Dansoman is one of the oldest and largest neighbourhoods in Accra and known to be the largest estates in West Africa.

Dansoman City or DC (for short) is one of the oldest and largest neighbourhoods in Accra, popularly known as D.C or Dansoman City. Dansoman is known to be the largest estates in West Africa with quite a number of modern structures. The Dansoman area was created in the 1970s to serve the accommodation needs of flood victims but in recent times, it has developed into one of the coolest neighbourhoods in Accra. Dansoman comprises so many suburbs including, ‘Akoko Foto,’ ‘Exhibition,’  ‘Glefe,’ ‘Mataheko,’ ‘Sahara,’ ‘Roundabout,’ ‘Last Stop,’ ‘Asoredanho,’ ‘SSNIT Flat,’ ‘Agege.’

Dansoman is hip; it is in rivalry with Tema for the neighbourhood that houses famous people both in the music and film industries in Ghana. Popular people living in the vicinity include reggae dancehall artists Samini and Kaakie, El, Trigmatic, Jupiter, actress Yvonne Nelson and former deputy minister of communication, Victoria Hammah. Dansoman is under Ablekuma West Constituency and its Member of Parliament is Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekumful.

Dansoman’s Nightlife

Of course, with this high level of popular people living in Dansoman, the vicinity has a vibrant nightlife. One of them is a new sports bar recently opened by dancehall reggae artist, Samini, called Danstadorm. The bar, restaurant and pub is a favourite hangout for music and movie stars. Other hangouts in Dansoman are Kit Kat and Timberland, which was very famous back in the day. Goldhouse, Mr Biggs, Dela’s, Vanilla Bar and Restaurant, Fizzles, KFC are very popular restaurants in the vicinity.

Hospitals in the neighbourhood include Central Dansoman Clinic, a community health centre made up of general practitioners and other health professionals. Their services cover general health care provision, dental care, family planning and laboratory. St. Gloria’s clinic and maternity home located at Agege, as the name implies, is a maternity home and provides general health care services to people living in the neighbourhood. Dansoman Polyclinic is the only government health facility that caters for the entire the community.

Schools in Dansoman

One of the oldest educational facilities in Dansoman is St. Martins de Porres School. It is privately owned by Mr and Mrs Laast who started the school in 1973 to serve the educational needs of the people in the community. Ave Maria is a basic school founded by the late Mrs Mary Ama KyemAntwi that provides quality teaching and learning for children living in and around Dansoman. Dayspring Montessori International, Alpha Beta Education Centre, Step by Step Montessori, Blessed School Complex are basic schools in Dansoman.

Secondary schools in the neighbourhood are Dansoman Senior High School, Ebenezer Senior High, St Margaret Mary Senior High, Wesley Grammar Senior High, Seven Great Princes Academy and Datus School Complex which provide both primary and secondary education to children in the vicinity.

Methodist University is a privately owned university in Dansoman established about 14 years ago by the Methodist Church of Ghana.

Security

Dansoman has a large police station equipped with very modern facilities. The presence of the police has drastically reduced the crime rate in the community. There is a fire station, a keep-fit club, a post office and a large market. Financial Institutions like Ecobank, GCB Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, Barclays Bank, Agricultural Development Bank, Fidelity Bank, Bank of Africa and HFC Bank have branches in Dansoman.
