One of the biggest decisions that you can make in life is buying a home because of the cost involved in the investment. Deciding whether to buy a house or an apartment is not easy. You have to try picture and where you would want to be in the future.

Q: Why should I consider a house?

A:  Houses have yards or compounds providing extra space to organise parties and gardens. The yards can also serve as parking spaces. Compared to apartments, a house owner can easily remodel and redesign the house without worrying about other tenants. With houses, you are assured of your privacy and there is no need to worry about your neighbours viewing or monitoring what is going on in your home. There are no restrictions or rules when people purchase houses; homeowners can keep whatever they want including pets.

Q: Why should you consider an apartment?

A: Apartments are mostly located in the middle of cities because in building apartments, developers are maximizing space and that gives you access to public transportation quite easily. Apartments are smaller compared to houses, making them much cheaper than houses in terms of cost. Security is better in apartments since you are naturally surrounded by other neighbours.

Q: How much space do you need?

A: This is the next important question you need to ask yourself. Apartments are much smaller than houses, therefore, it is advisable to to go for apartments if you are younger and have not started raising a family yet. In recent times, most of the apartments that are being built have more number of bedrooms. A lot of these apartments also have common playgrounds for children, swimming pools and other places for leisure. All that makes it a little difficult to choose between owning a house or an apartment based on space.

Q: What is your budget?

A:  The price of a house depends on the number of rooms and the location of the building. There are many luxurious apartments springing up in the capital which are selling at the same price or even more than houses. Most apartments in Ghana are located in prime areas making their prices as high as houses.

Q: Which is more flexible to live in?

A: One of the reasons a lot of people prefer houses over apartments is the fact that it is easier to expand a room when the occupant feels he/she needs more space but with apartments, that can not be done easily.

Q: Why should anyone choose one over the other?

A: There is no specific answer to this particular question but the trick is to consider your current lifestyle, family size and future plans and see which will best suit you.
