Interior design is the art, science and process of decorating a space – either a room or a building. An interior designer is the person who manages and coordinates that process. What other role does an interior designer play? This Q&A will elaborate on the duties of an interior designer in Ghana.

Q: What is the job description of an interior designer?

A: The job of an interior designer includes planning a space – determining which furnishing to put where and what to make out of a particular room. They know how furnishings should interact to make a room attractive. Interior designers are able to tell you the material you need to acquire to design a room. Technically, interior designers are able to assist in structural planning, safety and health issues as well as building codes. Rita Duodu, interior designer with Harmony and Sharms in Ghana, describes the duties of an interior designer as “Persons responsible for designing an empty space focusing on themes, colour schemes, decoration style and the last thing – furnishing style. Basically interior designers make a place look beautiful.”

Q: What do you think a designer should focus on when designing a space?

A: Interior designers focus mainly on colour, lighting, texture, space and how they are combined to make a space appealing. “We provide lighting, flooring, wall covering and any other thing a client wants. We also redesign spaces,” Ms. Duodu adds.

Q: Do interior designers have standard charges?

A: Designers do not have standard charges. They work according to the space of the room or the building and with the size, a budget is given. “We provide advice particularly to corporate bodies and individuals, telling them where to place what. We decide what needs to be done for the available budget. We, the designers, send proposals to our clients and when they approve, we work with that budget.”

Q: Is there a difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator?

A: Interior designers have been formally trained to acquire the skills, whilst interior decorators are often not formally trained. They focus on making a space look beautiful without focusing much on the structural design of the building.

Q: Which do I need: an interior designer or decorator?

A: That depends on your needs. If the work you require to be done on your building or space includes structural changes like breaking a wall, adding a new window or door, etc., then the services of a designer is what you need. If the work does not include making any changes to the structure of the building but beautifying the space, then the services of a decorator is what you require.
