Cleaning your home can be more fun and less expensive than you may imagine. How? Get rid of the toxic detergents and cleansers and make them yourself. There are natural products that can be used to clean, deodorise, scours the bathroom tub, work surfaces and the sinks in your home.
In Ghana for instance, it is quite common to see people making their metal buckets shine by using natural products such as ash and lime. Today’s post will take you through other common non-toxic cleaning materials you will need to make your home sparkle.
Natural and non-toxic home cleaning products that can keep your house clean at all times include:
- Baking soda – It serves as a scouring agent that cleanses and keeps the environment fresh at all times.
- White vinegar – This is one very essential liquid needed in every home. It is an acetic acid that gets rid of grease, dissolves mineral deposits and prevents moulds from collecting in your house. They also get rid of soap scums especially when you use hard water.
- Fragrant oils – They disinfect and freshen up the room. They can serve as air fresheners.
- Lemon – It is a natural acidic fruit that kills bacteria and serves as scouring agent.
- Corn starch – Used to wash carpets and rugs, clean windows and make furniture shine.
- Washing soda – They remove grease and stains from surfaces.
- Hydrogen peroxide – According to research, hydrogen peroxide has over 30 uses. They can be used as cleansing and whitening agents, removes dirt and stains and serve as disinfectants. They can be used on tiles, cutting surfaces, toilet bowls and tub scums.
- Alcohol – It is mostly used as disinfectant.
- Borax – Borax is a cleansing agent that can be used to clean floors and walls.
- Water – This is the most important cleansing agent you need for your home.
5 DIY home cleansing agents
- All-purpose cleansing agent – This cleansing agent can be prepared using ½ gallon of water, ½ cup of baking soda and ¼ cup of vinegar.
- Carpet stain remover – This can be prepared with ½ cup of water and ½ cup of vinegar. Mix them in a spray bottle and spray directly on the stain. Use a sponge and warm water to wipe the stained area after applying the vinegar and water.
- Bathroom mould stain remover – Mix ½ cup of hydrogen peroxide with a cup of water in a spray bottle. Apply it to mould and wait for at least 30 minutes before washing it off with a sponge.
- Disinfectant – Mix 1 tablespoon of borax with 2 tablespoon of vinegar with 1 ½ cup of hot water.
- Air freshener – Leave peels of lemon in the home. Boiling white vinegar while cooking strong smelling foods keep the air fresh.
