Small Space Solutions for Apartments

Renting or owning a large furnished space is the dream of most homeowners. But what happens if the space you are renting is a little smaller than what you want?

Perhaps you are moving into an apartment as a young professional and wondering which items to purchase for the room. Then here are some quick suggestions on what to do to maximise the space you have at home.

1. Rethink your furniture

Furniture takes up most of the space in the room. If you are now considering which to get, why not go for fold away chairs or other furniture items? You could also try furniture with a dual purpose, such as  beds that can also serve as a couch. These can always be put away when they are not in use, saving you space.

2. Place bookshelves strategically

Bookshelves can take so much space but when placed carefully can allow more room for other items. Placing the book shelf close to the well is the best way of saving space. If there is a sofa or couch in the room, place it in front of the shelf.

3. Choose bright colours for the room

The likelihood of cramming too much into a room is high in smaller spaces. Choose a bright colour like yellow or white to make the room appear spacious. A pop of colour, unexpectedly on the wall, can shift the focus from the chaos in the room.

4. Think creatively

Small space is an opportunity to be creative; there are no laid down rules for arranging the stuff in the apartment. The bed can be placed very close to the wall. Items that need to be kept away can be placed under the bed. Do not spread all the items in the space. A wall mounted table can also help you save space. A shelf close to the ceiling can also be strategic and will save you some space on the floor. Place hooks behind the door to hang clothes. Also, place a basket under a table and put items that do not have a designated place inside . It’s all about being creative.

5. Choose one colour for wall and furniture

Another way of keeping the room larger than it appears is by painting the furniture the same colour as the wall and placing it close to the wall. The furniture will appear to be part of the wall, giving the impression that you are saving on space.
