After acquiring a house in Ghana, you may decide to change some features. This seems simple but remodelling can be very tasking to implement. There’s a lot that goes into changing the design and functionality of a house, especially if it’s already furnished to suit a style and preference you want changed.
The process of remodelling is exciting and breathes new life into a space and equally adds value to your home while giving it a whole new feel and look. However, the bugging question during that remodelling is: how exactly do you achieve that new feel and look?
In as much as tearing out a wall to expand the area; reconfiguring the kitchen layout so that the fridge, cabinets and sink can be arranged in a different position or location altogether; or something as simple as turning a guest bedroom into a new office may seem accomplishing after its finally outcome, the question remains the same: where do you move your valuable items to prevent damage or so they are not in the way?
This can be stressful to move items, most of them potentially very heavy and returning them when the remodeling is complete. We attempt to cut down the stress with these three simple steps you might want to check out or consider when remodeling.
MAKE USE OF EXTERNAL SPACES LIKE THE PORCH AND BALCONY
Majority of townhouses in Accra, apartments and estate homes are gated. Especially in the capital city, Accra. The condition of your neighbourhood determines whether some possessions can be left in the open (corridor, balcony, porch etc.) and still remain safe.
Additionally, keep in mind furniture and electronic devices are better off in a protected area where dust, paint and the elements cannot reach them. Avoid leaving your furniture and electronic equipment in open areas, especially, during the rainy season.
Also, it is very important to make sure your neighbourhood is free from burglars and is highly secure. Otherwise, consider having someone competent watch over them for the duration of the remodelling.
PICK ANOTHER ROOM IN THE HOUSE
This may not be an option to many people with little or no extra space, however, if done right, even the smaller houses can manage this. For instance, if the kitchen is undergoing a remodelling, move all the things to the living room or the bedroom and keep moving to unused rooms until complete.
The goal is simply to protect the items from dirt and ensure they won’t be taken by unauthorised people.
PHONE A FRIEND/FAMILY OPTION
It is absolutely no biggie to invade for a little while especially for a reason such as this in the space of a friend or family member. Just make sure it’s with their consent or approval, and that you don’t abuse their kindness by keeping your stuff with them for too long. This option takes away the stress of having to move things about constantly during your remodelling along with the attendant constant worrying about whether or not the space where you’re currently keeping them is adequately safe.
Since a remodelling generally takes about a few weeks or months, a friend with a spare room, a big garage or an unused outbuilding will be a godsend for storing your items while you remodel.
Remodeling a home can be very messy, especially if your belongings are not moved out of the way. Pick an option that best fits your situation and enjoy your home’s new look when you’re done. Let us know in the comments what other methods worked for you that we did not cover in this article.
