The neighbourhood is sparsely populated and occupied mainly by inhabitants in the mid to upper-income bracket. The neighbourhood derives its name from the University of Ghana, Legon, due to the position of its location on the east of Ghana’s premier university. East Legon is bordered by the Tema Motorway, Legon and Madina. East Legon hills can be found further east.

The neighbourhood mostly contains plush homes, ranging from state-of-the-art apartments to castle-like storey homes. Unfortunately, like most parts of Accra, this neighbourhood used to suffer from erratic electricity and water supply, prompting many inhabitants to purchase electricity generators and water storage tanks.

East Legon also has some interesting street names. From the likes of Lagos Avenue, named after the Nigerian capital, to streets named after fruits such as ‘Aluguntugi’(soursop), the neighbourhood never ceases to entertain with its refreshing street names. The small towns in east Legon also have equally funny names like Mempeasem (I don’t want trouble) and Bawaleshie which means under the Bawale (name of a tree or a diety).

For parents wondering where to enrol their kids, East Legon is home to some of the best schools in Ghana. L’Ecole Francaise, the French school established by the French government is regarded by many as the top institution within the neighbourhood, with others like American International School, British International School and Galaxy International School forming part of a core of highly reputable schools in the neighbourhood.

Crime is relatively low in the neighbourhood, compared to other local suburbs, thanks in part to the omnipresence of the Ghana Police force. East Legon has its own police station and regular police patrols within the area. Police barriers are erected almost in all the major parts of the neighbourhood to ensure maximum security.

Entertainment isn’t hard to come by, with a number of entertainment centres providing services to consumers. From Lizzy Sports Complex – a multi-purpose entertainment centre – to the A’n’C Shopping Mall which has a wide variety of shops and entertainment ventures, East Legon can be described as “the hood that rocks”.

Tourists and visitors should have no fear as a plethora of hotels litter the streets of East Legon ready to meet their needs. However, this comes at a relatively high cost, as the minimum charge for the premier hotels is $100 a night. Hotels such as Erata, Mensvic and MJ Grand Hotel are some of the few hotels within the vicinity. You can also find short stay apartments in East Legon that will meet your residential needs. These apartments usually come furnished and with room service.

East Legon is also home to some of Ghana’s celebrated personalities such as Abedi Pele, who has a part of Lagos Avenue unofficially named after him. Others are Peace FM’s Founder, Kwame Despite, Joy FM’s CEO, Kwasi Twum and former Bayern Munich star Sammy Kufour. Most of them live in plush East Legon houses within the neighbourhood

Living in East Legon, however, can be expensive, with a number of traders and business ventures charging premium prices added to the high cost of rent and property rates. East Legon Restaurants are also almost always open so you can have a bite to remove your anger.
