MEQASA AT 10: A DECADE OF SHAPING THE REAL ESTATE LANDSCAPE

MEQASA AT 10: A DECADE OF SHAPING THE REAL ESTATE LANDSCAPE

In 2013, three men, Kelvin Nyame, Rashad Seini, and Kofi Amuasi, caused a disruption in the way properties were searched for and advertised in Ghana.

Before Meqasa’s arrival, the scene was characterised predominantly by word of mouth and handwritten signposts as well as traditional advertising – TV, radio, billboards, etc. It is clear, in hindsight, to see how limiting and inadequate these channels were in linking property seekers with the homes and properties of their dreams.

In the attempt to bring some solutions to the housing search and advertising scene, the online portal Google Trader, a general classifieds site from Google (Alphabet, in contemporary times) sprung up. Unfortunately, considering its novelty, many, especially home owners, were slow to embrace it, thus, information provided was quite scanty and unreliable. Also, there were a bunch of fraudsters taking advantage of the confusion to defraud the unsuspecting public and further ruin the reputation of legitimate real estate agents.

Thus, armed with the sheer zeal to provide a more efficient, and safe housing search and advertising experience, three Ghanaian graduates from the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST), came up with a concept for an enhanced real estate marketplace online. They called it meQasa (now Meqasa).

The trio recognised a gap in the market for a user-friendly platform that would streamline the process of finding and renting apartments in Ghana. Leveraging their technical skills and entrepreneurial mindset, they secured seed funding from the Meltwater Foundation and developed a working prototype for their innovative real estate portal, which revolutionised the way people search for housing in Ghana.

In 2017, after Frontier Digital Ventures, the leading operator of online classifieds businesses in emerging countries from Malaysia, invested upwards of US$500,000 in Meqasa, a move was made to acquire Meqasa’s main competitor in the online property search space – Jumia House Ghana, pushing Meqasa to assert her leadership fully within the real estate space in Ghana. According to CEO of Meqasa, Kelvin Nyame, the acquisition of Jumia House Ghana placed Meqasa in a prime position to better serve Ghana’s growing real estate market.

While making an online impact with over 2.5 million annual website visits, Meqasa has also, for 6 years, successfully put together the biggest offline (and online) Home and Property Fairs, in response to a demand for an offline showcase of the best real estate on offer in Ghana. Partnering numerous top developers in the country to bring property seekers a wide range of housing options and exclusive deals, these Property Fairs have allowed Meqasa to curate a diverse portfolio of properties, catering to the varying needs and budgets of potential buyers. Additionally, the housing fairs serve as a platform for developers to showcase their latest projects and connect directly with interested buyers, fostering a dynamic and interactive property market.

In 2020, as the COVID pandemic raged, and the world experienced strict restrictions on social gatherings and movements, Meqasa, once again, proving her flair for innovation and growth, organised the first online Property Fair in the country.
