Mouth-Watering Adventure: Noteworthy Local Food Joints to Visit

News travels fast, and if you haven’t heard of or tried “Ghana Jollof” yet, it is time to break that innocence! The famous Ghana jollof is only one of Ghana’s many delicious cuisines out of a wide range of others we intend to put you on the path to discover.

Allow us to take you on a mouth-watering adventure where we provide you with a list of local joints to visit in the capital city, Accra, and beyond for the most delicious and satisfying Ghanaian delicacies.

DI MA ENSA RESTAURANT

Pronounced as “Di Ma Ensa” meaning “Eat till it’s finished”, this restaurant is a brand proudly promoting the culture of Ghana through food. Just as the name suggests, you are likely to finish a meal and ask for more.

Located at 52 Swaniker, St Abelemkpe- Accra, here are a few local meals on the menu of Di Ma Ensa for every time you make a visit: Waakye, Mpotompoto, Angwamo, Shitolo, Fufu, etc.

BUSH CANTEEN

Bush Canteen is a hidden gem with tasty local dishes and located in an airy environment at Shiashie. With an environment friendly enough for family and friends, Bush Canteen equally makes provision for a variety of Ghanaian delicacies.

Tip from us, brunching locally at Bush Canteen is favourable. Just don’t forget the early bird catches the worm.

LA LAS KITCHEN

Located at Spintex, La Las Kitchen is a place to visit for your tasty fufu! Word on the street is that they have the best and most affordable fufu in the whole of Spintex. Also, if you love a meal well garnished with protein sources, La Las kitchen is your best bet.

As you enjoy your tasty meal from La Las kitchen, don’t forget to check out the  many and beautiful apartments you can rent which Spintex is famous for.

Additional great news is Spintex is close to many of the best locations in Accra!

AGBAMAMI CHOP BAR

Now, if you live in Tema, you know we have got you covered. Agbamami is a traditional restaurant located in Tema, Community 2. Pronounced as “agba ma mi” this open hall restaurant makes provision for local delicacies such as fufu, banku, omo tuo and others. They, equally, have a counter where you place orders while you enjoy the beautiful sight of your food being prepared.

AFRICAN POT

Taking you all the way to Wa, the capital town of Wa Municipal District in the Upper East Region of Northern Ghana is African Pot.

Just as every clan, tribe or region has their own special local delicacies, the ever tasty Zuo Zaafi calls this place home. This delicacy, preferred by many when served with the tasty green ayoyo or salinvogu soup which comes with stew to complement it is a must-have and especially as people always say, eating food in the native land it originated from tastes better than anywhere else.

If you visit Wa and get a chance to try it, let us know if this argument still holds water.

BUKA RESTAURANT

Located in the heart of Accra, Osu, is Buka Restaurant. With a menu tailored and infused with specially selected ingredients, Buka Restaurant serves modern traditional Ghanaian cuisine such as Gari Fotor, Kontomire Stew, Fetri Detsi and Guinea fowl groundnut soup among others.

Just in case you would also like to try out some Nigerian cuisine such as Orisirisi Stew with Ewedu or Egusi, Buka Restaurant has your culinary cravings covered!

LUNCH CITY RESTAURANT

Just opposite TV3 Ghana, on Kanda Avenue, is Lunch City Restaurant serving a wide range of delicacies. Their special banku and okro soup is beyond tasty.

The number of chop bars (as we call local eateries specialising in local foods) in Ghana is too much to attempt covering in this one list. However, knowing the right place to go and what to get from there can be a little tricky. Unlike embarking on an adventure to explore houses for rent and  for sale in Ghana, going on a hunt for a meal you have been craving can be disappointing and sad without the proper guidance from a local connoisseur.

Let us know what Ghanaian dish you have particularly enjoyed and where you got it. We hope you enjoy your meals as much as we enjoyed curating this list for you.
