Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, popularly referred to as KNUST is the largest public university located in Kumasi, Ashanti Region and Ghana’s second university. It was previously known as Kumasi College of Technology but the name was changed to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology by an Act of Parliament on 22 August 1961, under the supervision of R.P Baffour.
The University of Science and Technology succeeded the Kumasi College of Technology which was established by a Government Ordinance on 6th October 1951. It was, however, opened officially on 22nd January 1952 with 200 Teacher Training students transferred from Achimota, to form the nucleus of the new College. The college ascended to university status and was renamed Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (thus birthing KNUST) by an Act of Parliament on 22nd August 1961. This name was changed to University of Science and Education following the revolution of 24th February 1966 but later changed again to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology by another Act of Parliament, Act 559 of 1998.
Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah believed in education and played a major role in the establishment of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in 1952. The university is one of Nkrumah’s major achievements and an incredible Ghanaian tertiary institution which has immensely impacted Ghana’s educational sector.
In 2005, the university condensed the various faculties into six colleges. A prospective student can be admitted under only one of these 6 colleges. These are:

Previously, prospective students could purchase admission forms from selected banks and post offices across the country but now, you only need to buy a scratch card and visit https://apps.knust.edu.gh/admissions/ to apply using the serial number and pin on the card.Admission Forms and Online Registration
Helplines have been included on this page in case you need any assistance. This is commendable, considering it’s a new product they are rolling out to anxious prospective students.
Do well to guard the serial number and pin on the card with your heart as this would be used later on to assess your admission status.
The admissions list are published on the school’s website as and when, but usually takes about 2-3 months, and also announced to the general public through both digital and print media. You can know your admission status by using the serial number and pin on the card you used in applying for your preferred programs.
Furthermore, you could visit the Dean of Student’s office to find out if you made it to your preferred program or not.
Aside the regular courses, the university offers a distance learning program for students who might not be necessarily situated in the Ashanti region and cannot afford the luxury of relocating to KNUST or Kumasi for longer periods.
Below is an image of the IDL centre and Accra City Campus which was commissioned.
This six-storey edifice and its basement feature nine 150-seater lecture halls, 120-seater computer and server rooms with several offices and two-bed-sitters within the office block. An estimated cost of Ten Million Five Hundred Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢10,500,000.00) was spent on the facility.
Fees for each program are reviewed yearly and paid based on the category one falls under. Students can either fall under one of these main categories:

KNUST’s main campus is about 7 square miles in area and about eight miles to the east of Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital. The university has given life to its surrounding communities; Bomso, Ayeduase, Kotei and Kentinkrono.
Obviously, due to the high number of students being admitted each year, not every student can be a resident in the 6 traditional halls of residence. This is where the real estate industry comes in to solve this issue.
Aside from the popular Brunei and Tech Credit Hostels, due to their location on campus, a number of good hostels have also sprung up near and far from the school. One really needs to consider proximity to faculty, safety and comfort in choosing a hostel. For those who want to still feel a home away from home, meqasa.com has a number of good properties in Kumasi you should check out.
At the core of this university is technology hence, the introduction of a student portal where students log in with their Username, Password and Student ID to assess their fees, results etc.
KNUST has also pushed itself to introduce a mobile app for the students called AIM, which stands for Academic Info Manager. This makes it easier for students to assess information about their courses, results and announcements from the convenience of their phones.
