How to Take Care of Your Garden During the Harmattan

Most people living in West Africa, and especially Ghana, are experiencing what is known as the Harmattan. This season is characterised by dry and dusty winds, blowing from the North-Eastern part of Africa towards the West. The dry winds carry dust and sand particles which block the sun resulting in arid weather during the Harmattan season.

During this period, people are advised to drink a lot of water and keep their bodies well-clothed to prevent dehydration. As well as taking care of yourself, you need to also ensure that your garden is protected. But how do you keep the plants from dying during this period? Here are some tips on the best practices:

  1. Water the Plants Frequently

Whatever plants you have in your garden, whether they are flowers or lawn, it is vital that you water the plants regularly – in the mornings and evenings. The water will keep the soil moist and will wash the dust off to keep plants clean.

  2.  Mulch the Soil

Mulching keeps the soil from drying out. The process involves covering the topsoil with either dry plants or polythene to keep the soil damp during this period. Plants get scorched during this season because of the harsh weather conditions, so it is necessary to cover them to prevent the plants from drying out completely.

  3. Utilize Shade

The weather during the Harmattan season is mostly chilly in the mornings and late at night but during the day, it gets stifling. It is important to protect the plants against the scorching sun, by utilizing shade. There are shade cloths, which allow aeration and can be made yourself. Another option is cultivating trees to provide shade for smaller plants during this season.

  4. Do Not Sow Seeds or Transplant

Soils are mostly dry during the Harmattan season so it is advised that seeds are not planted during this period. Do not transplant any seedlings too. Wait until the weather gets humid before you plant.

  5. Do Not Trim Plants

During the Harmattan season, it is not advisable to trim plants. Leave the plants in their original state and water them regularly. A certain percentage of the leaves will dry up and fall to the ground but some will be able to withstand the harsh weather, therefore leaving less need to trim the plants.
