Jumia House “Blog Walks” in Accra Clean Up

The first Saturday of every month is currently being marked in Ghana as National Sanitation Day. The day has been instituted by the Government of Ghana to solve the country’s poor sanitation problem.

On Saturday, December 6th, Jumia House in collaboration with Blogging Ghana organized a “Blog Walk” to mark National Sanitation Day. Blog Walk is a mobile walk which brings together bloggers and social media enthusiasts who clean up the city of Accra and take photographs while they are at it.

The participants cleaned up areas around the Accra Mall. They were spotted in white t-shirts and gloves moving round the mall, hand-picking rubbish, cleaning the landscape adjacent the mall and collecting refuse from the gutters.

It was an exciting time for the team because they were not only cleaning but they socialised, took photographs, cracked jokes and laughed while they rid the Accra Mall and its environs of rubbish. Speaking on why they decided to get involved in the exercise, members of the team cited patriotism and their dream of seeing the city rid of dirt as their reason for taking part in the Blog Walk.

After the clean up, the team distributed Camel antiseptic liquid to sellers as they marched  to Yenkodi Restaurant in East Legon to wind down. The team was offered a variety of meals ranging from banku and tilapia, fufu and soup, fried rice and goat meat, potato chips and some drinks. It was also a period of socializing for most of the members of the team.

The Blog Walk was supported by Kaymu Ghana, PZ Cussons and United States Embassy.
