Here’s How to Declutter Your Closet

We all come to that point when we know we have more than our closet can contain. The signs include:

  1. The closet is full of clothes you no longer wear
  2. You have trouble finding your favourite clothes or
  3. Your clothes are always wrinkled from being shoved to the back of the closet.

The process of decluttering can be a tough one, and if you are like most people, just thinking about it can exhaust you. However, what needs to be done has to be done. More so, you can have a system where you get to declutter daily and not have your clothes pile up.

Here are a few tips to declutter:

Choose a convenient time and get some bags ready. All you need is about an hour and a half; less or more depending on how quick it takes you to decide what clothes to keep.

  1. Take out everything from the closet. Doing this section by section will be easier, though it takes more time.
  2. Sort the clothes into those you will keep, those you will give/throw away and the ‘undecided’. For the ones you are not sure what to do with, you can keep them in a bag for a couple of months after which hopefully, you can decide what to do.
  3. Clean out the closet neatly and put back the pile which you have decided to keep.
  4. The last step is to store the bag and label it “undecided’. Be sure to note the date you did the sorting. The pile you plan to donate, do it immediately.
  5. To keep your closet from cluttering again:
    1. Remove old clothes when new clothes join your closet
    2. Don’t keep clothes that no longer fit
    3. If you haven’t worn it in a year, you most probably won’t.
