Guest Post: Mosquito Repelling Solutions for the Home

Living in this part of the world, mosquitos are rife. Getting a bite is not only annoying but there is also the risk of getting sick, particularly from malaria.

Mosquitoes have been a hindrance to me in my home especially when I want to entertain guests in the evenings or if I want to chill out on the porch.

As an interior designer, here are my top four tips for making your home mosquito-proof.

1. Plant some lemon grass around the home

Lemongrass plants are a great way to repel mosquitos. You could either purchase the seeds and grow them yourself or you can purchase the plants from your local plant nursery. I love the nurseries at East Legon around the bridge, not only do they have lemon grass plants but they have a wide variety of other plants that repel pests in the home.

2. Lavender plants

Get some lavender plants and place them around the house or on your porch area. Lavender does not only look very pretty but gives your home or garden a facelift with their purple colour, they also smell great too.

3. Make a your own candles

Did you know you can make your own candles with ingredients you could probably find around the house. Mosquito repelling candles made with citronella, rosemary, thyme, lemongrass and lime make a great smelling repellent, they can also double up as a cool centerpiece.

4. Orange, banana & lemon peel

Next time you have your fruits, think twice before throwing away the peel.  Rub your fruit peels into the soil or plants around the home, this adds a zesty fresh smell to the home as well as repelling mosquitoes and keeping your skin bite free.
