Ghana’s Kotoka International Airport Set to Open in September

The President of Ghana, during his latest address to the nation on 16th August 2020, hinted that the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra is set to re-open on the 1st of September 2020. The KIA has been closed to international traffic since 22nd March 2020.

Ghana has managed to contain the coronavirus and currently has some of the lowest mortality rates from COVID-19 in Africa and globally. As of 24th August 2020, Ghana has recorded 43,622 cases, 41,695 recoveries and 263 deaths. In a populace of over 30 million, that is commendable.

The Ghana Health Service(GHS) has outlined some important guidelines to the KIA in preparation for the reopening of the airport on 1 September, 2020.

Below are the measures the GHS has ordered KIA to put in place:

  1. Ensure there is no congestion at all sections of the airport (arrival, departure and environs) to prevent failure to adhere to social distancing protocols.
  2. Compulsory mask wearing for all passengers (both arriving and departing) as well as staff.
  3. Temperature monitoring to continue at both arrival and departure terminals.
  4. Ensure social distancing and compulsory mask-wearing at the car parks and in front of all terminals.

The president has assured that all passengers will be tested before being allowed to exit the airport.

Real Estate Business

Ghana has proven effective in containing the coronavirus and its spread and, as such, the government believes that the country is ready to open up its borders. This might be the new normal until we successfully eradicate the coronavirus from the world.

Business is gradually returning to normal in Ghana. The real estate industry is also well suited for business as many real estate developers and agents are prepared to do business. Hand washing, wearing of masks and social distancing is a norm in Ghana as the general citizenry has adapted to the new protocols set in place to curb the spread of the virus. Data shows that the methods are working.

If you are flying in to do business in Ghana, it would be best to pre-arrange all your meetings and stick to a schedule. Arrival at the airport is set to be as seamless as possible so that everyone can go about their business in a safe environment.
