Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) To Begin Monitoring and Taxing of E-commerce Businesses Starting April 1ST, 2022

As part of the initiative to broaden and widen the taxation net in the country to achieve the Ghc 80.3 Million (Ghana Cedis) tax target for the year 2022 and also reach a goal of up to 16.5% GDP, the Ghana Revenue Authoring(GRA) has announced that starting 1st April 2022 online and e-commerce businesses in the country will be taxed.

These developments will be enforced with a special-purpose software designated to monitor online businesses and tax them accordingly. According to the Commissioner of GRA, Rev. Ammishaddi Owusu Amoah, the taxation will commence by the first of April, 2022.

“Last week, I sat in on a presentation of a software, how it works and the demonstration of it and we are confident that by the 1st of April, the taxation of E-commerce will begin”

The tax applies to all local and foreign online business providers which means multinational businesses that accrue revenue from Ghana will have to comply with Ghana’s e-commerce tax. Again, the same software will monitor and tax online gaming and betting activities.

The Commissioner of GRA also mentioned that with a collaboration with the National Communications Authority, there is confidence that the implementation of the new E-commerce tax will be successful.

This announcement was made during the authority’s 2022 management retreat held at the Volta Serene Hotel in Ho.
