The nation of Ghana has decided to embark on a monthly clean-up exercise to foster both communalism and cleanliness in the country. The first exercise that took place two weeks ago was a major success.
In light of the prominence given waste management in Ghana, Jumia House, your favorite real estate website takes you through a few terminologies concerning waste management.
Airspace
The projected bank cubic yards of the landfill to be filled with waste as determined by survey and other engineering techniques.
Biogas
This is a mixture of different gases produced by the breakdown of many organic matter in the absence of some oxygen. Through the release of this gas, homes are able to generate energy for cooking as well as electricity. Biogas could be a complementary source of energy to the already existing ones in Ghana.
Biodigester
This is a system which produces biogas through natural anaerobic decomposition of organic material. Biogas has grown in importance due to its propensity to provide not just energy for cooking, but power for our homes. A few real estate developers have incorporated biodigesters in their construction plans and it would be very beneficial if others do same.
Boiler
A device used to absorb the heat released during the combustion process of burning waste.
Composting
The process of collecting, grinding, mixing, piling and supplying sufficient moisture and air to organic materials to speed up natural decay. The resultant product can be added to the top soil and used as fertilizer for plants.
Recycle
This involves changing materials into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials. In Ghana, the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant Ltd (ACARP) has been engaging in recycling activities a little over two years now and has contributed immensely to the housing sector with products tailored for families and commercial entities alike.
