Ghana Interior Design Tips: Lighting up the Home

Your favourite column that seeks to give you the best interior design tips is back with more information, which will enable you to keep your home as plush as possible.

Have you been wondering what kind of light is appropriate for which part of your home? In this article, we provide you with some basic tips on the best light to use.

The living room – The best choice of lighting for the living room is an overhead fixture, which should be able to be dimmed, especially when the television is switched on.

If the living room is also used for studying, then there is the need to have lamps which glow downwards, close to the seats that are used for reading.

For decorative purposes, fixed, round lights can be installed in each corner of the room to provide additional lighting. If you want to make a  vase, particular seat or a piece of artwork the focus of the room, place a light close by, to ensure it is not left in the dark.

The dining hall – To make the dining room look inviting, place a chandelier directly over the table.

The only area which should be brightly lit and in main focus is the dining table.

If the rest of the hall needs more of a glow, small lamps can be placed on sideboards.

The kitchen – A large overhead light is necessary over the main workspace in the kitchen.

Small lamps can also be installed under the kitchen cabinet to light up the work surface.

If the kitchen isn’t in use, you can still leave these small lamps switched on, in order to create a cosy atmosphere.

The bathroom – An overhead light should serve as the main source for the bathroom. Sconces by the mirror also illuminate the room for makeup application and shaving.

The bedroom – The bedroom is the most tranquil place in the home. One does not need bright lights right over the bed to create a harsh atmosphere. Bright lights may be necessary near the dressing area, and a reading lamp could be placed on the sideboard close to the bed. Perhaps consider big candles for a calmer, more relaxing atmosphere and a warm and romantic light.
