As Christmas approaches, many homes have set up several decorative pieces like  trees, lighting, ribbons and garlands. Christmas decorations especially the tree dates way back to the Renaissance Era of early Germany and it has evolved throughout the world and it has been an accepted part of the Christmas culture. The Christmas trees are conifers and firs which grow in the temperate zone of the globe but now, even in the tropics, Christmas is not the same without a Christmas tree even for those living in the tropics.  The Christmas tree is normally put up on the 23rd of December and it is considered as bad luck, if they are still up by the 7th January.

Here are a few tips on how to make decorated Christmas trees look beautiful in your home.

Choosing a tree

There are varieties of Christmas trees and the price is dependent on the size and the type. While in most European countries, Christmas trees come in the natural states which make them more expensive, in Ghana, Christmas trees are artificial and they can be bought from lifestyle shops, shopping malls and in Accra Central. The trees normally come alone and the decorations need to be bought separately. The Christmas tree is so common in the Central Business District of Accra that you might even see people holding and selling them in the traffic jam. There are white Christmas trees too which signify snow falling on the conifers but these trees are not so common in Ghana like the green Christmas tree. If you are fortunate to have firs in your garden then there is no need to purchase the Christmas tree. You can decorate the tree in your garden to make them look nice especially with multi-coloured LED lights

Decorating Christmas Trees

Three types of decorations are needed to liven up the tree. Garlands, ornaments and lights or what are known as Christmas lights are what are needed to make the tree look pretty.

Garlands – Garlands are wreaths normally made from natural flowers that are used to decorate doorposts and they could be used to decorate Christmas trees as well. The garlands that are used for on Christmas trees are made from plastic or fabric. They look best when they are wrapped from the top of the tree downwards. Don’t put all garlands on the same tree or the tree will look cluttered. Red garlands normally go well with the Christmas tree. You can use different coloured garlands to give the tree a nicer look.

Ornaments –  Ornaments can be used for the trees with your favourite ornament right in front of the tree where everyone can see.  The tree itself should be placed at a strategic position , where everyone can view it. Choose very colourful ornaments,they could be jewellery, small balls, candy sticks or anything you have collected from your  shopping trip.  The tree looks even better when the smaller ornaments are placed on top of the tree and the larger ones at the bottom of the tree.

Lights – This is what makes the Christmas tree look great especially in the night. Most companies in Ghana just drape their buildings with the lights to signify the yuletide. There are a variety of light which can be used for the tree –  traditional ones, LEDs, which are the most common and globe lights. The Christmas lights are so easy to get during the Christmas period even in traffic jams in the capital city, Accra. Your home will not be the same during the Christmas season if you do not erect a Christmas tree.
