Ghana Interior Design Tips: Avoiding a Cluttered Living Room

A lot of people dream of owning large homes in Ghana but what happens if your dream house is smaller than the way you wished it is? Do you leave the room cluttered because it’s small? Here are some tips on how to keep your small living room organized:

  1. To save space, be mindful of the furniture that you buy. The preferable furniture to go for are the foldable types. There are sofa-beds and tables which can be folded. There are beds with drawers as well. Avoid smaller pieces of furniture and go for the larger items. You can place the furniture diagonally instead of placing them in straight line
  2. Make sure your room has so much light, open the windows to allow more sunlight into the room. Dark rooms make your room appear smaller than they are. If your room does not have enough windows, switch on the lights in the room. Enough lights will make the room look bigger.
  3. Put up mirrors in your room. The mirror reflects lights which makes the room brighter.  You can place the mirror on the wall or you can make your cabinets and doors reflective. Place mirrors everywhere in your room. This will make your room brighter.
  4. Avoid brightly coloured, overly designed wallpapers, drapes and tablecloths.  Use cool colours instead of very hot colours. Use decorative pieces to enhance the beauty of your living room.
  5. Don’t put things you do do not need in the room. That is the main reason most rooms get over-crowded. A lot of people say, Ghanaians love ‘junk’; the old, dusty painting remains on the wall, the broken flower vase is kept on the table for decoration, old stuff is still kept in the room and this makes the room cluttered than they actually are. Dispose of these items and the room will look bigger.
