Annuals are those flowers that do not last longer than one growing season, leaves seeds and die off but are easier for beginners. Perennials, on the other hand, may go dormant but return during the next growing season. With the perennials, gardeners tend to plant then forget about the plant for a while but when they do bloom, it is worth the wait.
As a beginner, however, it is advisable to begin with annuals as they bloom faster and gradually venture into perennials.
