Five Interior Design Don’ts in Ghana

There are no hard and fast rules to life and similarly this is no different when it comes to interior design or décor in Ghana. However there are always some guidelines to help make your décor easier and fascinating.

1.Don’t Pick your Paint Color First

Paint colors make or break a space. Light sources vary from place to place and room-to-room, hence paint colors look different  based on the amount of light exposed to it.  It is advisable to use colors that complement the rest of your design, this works best after you’ve determined your design and other accessories for your room then you can choose the right shade of paint color to tie it all up and complement your pieces.  Also when buying paint, always look at the color in the natural light, as some store lights do not always best reflect the color.

2.Don’t Over-Theme

Yes, patterns and themes are great when designing a room or space and of course you can repeat your paint colors and patterns around a space but do not plaster the same repetitive theme all over your space or get too ‘matchy’.  Rather relate your pieces and let them blend into each other and your style.  Don’t walk into a store and buy a complete matching furniture set because it looks good in the store, consider your space, dimensions and lighting and pick which pieces will work best with what you already have.

3.Don’t Over-Crowd

Do not just throw all your décor pieces in a space because you can’t let go of them or because they are your all-time favorites and just have to be in your space.  Be strategic, find a great way to blend them all in without having each piece fight for attention.  Also consider setting your furniture in an angle when appropriate to help switch up your space a little. When using a rug as a centerpiece, consider the size of the rug and then the arrangement of the furniture around it, you can opt of any of the 3 basic arrangement: all on, all off or front on.  Whichever way you choose to go with your design, always remember to  allow for space and easy movement.

4.Don’t Forget Lighting

From previous posts, we always emphasize how lighting is key in creating the illusion of space.  Well here’s another great way to create variety and curiosity with your space, Layer your Lighting!  The room gets boring with everything is uniformly lit, your lighting helps highlight some areas in your space or room, tone down lighting in some areas and brighten them up in others, add some drama to your space by creating some dynamics with your light.  Mirrors also help create the illusions of more light and space, so consider placing a good mirror opposite a window and notice the amazing effect.

5.Don’t leave out your Personality

Remember to always inject some of your personality into your décor; it is what makes your design different from every other everyday design.  Concentrate on the details and let them reflect your style. It’s your space so personalize it!!
