Five Common Dog Breeds Found in Ghanaian Homes

Dogs are pets – they provide companionship to their owners and also serve as a source of security in most homes in Ghana. In residential areas which are mostly walled, dogs are kept to scare away burglars.

Here is a compilation of dog breeds kept in most homes. Jumia House Ghana provides you with a brief description of the nature of these dogs in case you are planning on getting one.

Rottweiler

These are one of the most common breeds kept in most homes in Ghana. They are known for their robustness, agility and smartness. They have large bones and are tough compared to other dogs. They are known to be very affectionate towards their owners but reserved towards strangers making them very good guard dogs.

Doberman

Swift in nature, highly intelligent and energetic dogs – slimmer and taller compared to the Rottweilers. They are very good guard dogs and can serve as a great companion. They are able to tolerate very hot weather conditions and enjoy being part of the family to protect them from harm. With their high energy levels, owners are required to take them out to exercise, otherwise, they will get bored and frustrated.

British Bulldog

A lover of kids and a gentle companion, the bulldog is a common breed found in most Ghanaian homes. They are muscular, a bit short in size, compared to most breeds with large heads. Although they look ferocious, these dogs are very friendly towards kids. They require a lot of exercising because of their size. On a negative note, they are prone to joint and other muscular diseases, that is why regular exercise is a requirement for these canines.

Boerboel

Originating from South Africa, the Boerboel is known for its large size and protective nature. The Boerboel is relatively calm, confident and stable. Generally, this breed of dog is able to withstand very harsh weather conditions. They are faithful security dogs and are able to put intruders away by their mere size alone.

German Shepherd

Very intelligent, alert, devoted companions in nature, the German Shepherd is a popular breed in most homes. Mostly used as guard dogs, even by security services. They are believed to have the best traits in most dogs. Due to their high energy level, they are mostly happy when left outdoors (in fenced or walled homes) where they burn excess energy. They become alive when they spend some time with the family indoors as well.
