Easy Ways To Improve Your Indoor Air Quality

Ever visited someone and all you wanted to do was leave because you didn’t like the smell in the space? This could have been as a result of a stuffy environment, mold spores, pet dander, and dust mites circulating through the house. The situation could get so bad that it can even trigger allergies or cause respiratory problems for some.

As much as it’s probably not feasible to get rid of all irritants in your home, it’s very doable to reduce them to the barest minimum. Here are some easy ways to improve your indoor air quality.

Simply Let In Fresh Air.

It is always advisable to open your windows and let in fresh air from time to time. This simple action will go a long way to drive out potential air-contaminants, and keep your home smelling fresh. Kitchens can be another source of unwanted overstayed smells. This can be avoided by using a fan in the kitchen which would blow away cooking fumes that linger in the living space overtime.

Keep a Clean Environment.

A clean home goes a long way to transcend into the good health of its occupants. Cleaning regularly will definitely do the trick of minimizing or getting rid of dust and other air contaminants. Let’s break it down; your kind of flooring, curtains, bedding and sofa covers, as well as clutter determines the amount of contaminants in your home; which unattended to, may lead to foul air quality in your living space. Focus on these guidelines when attending to these:

  • Clutter; rid your space of a collection of things lying about in an untidy state as much as possible. This can be done by cleaning up after yourself every time, or leaving things exactly how organized.
  • Beddings, drapes, sofa covers, etc; regularly wash your bed sheets, curtains, sofa covers, and other things that tend to attract contaminants in your air space, at least once in every two weeks (murmuring…particularly the guys).
  • Floors; it is always good to vacuum woolen carpets or area mats/rugs more than once a week. This helps avoid trapping of any sort of pet dander or dust mite in the area; as these types of carpets easily trap such contaminants. Choosing a hard-surface floor alternative is also a much better way to cut back on these irritants.

Get Yourself an Air Purifier.

If you don’t feel like regularly letting in fresh air, cleaning your floor rugs, beddings and clearing clutter, or you’re unwilling to get rid of your pet or unable to avoid it from coming inside, then it will be great to invest in an air purifier. An air purifier is simply a device that captures air pollutants (explained in detail here). This device, particularly an ionic air purifier, when placed in the most commonly-used space in the home, captures pollutants that could be trapped overtime and cause bad air quality, allergies, or respiratory problems.

You can also try dehumidifiers for damp places in the home like the kitchen, the basement, or even the bedroom if you tend to dry small personal things in there. A dehumidifier helps prevent mold growing on your walls or heavy-lingered musty smells from cooking and laundry moisture. This renders a fresher atmosphere in your living space.

Trying keeping the greenery outdoors.

Nicely manicured indoor plants are beautiful. They can serve as a complement to a great artsy decor, as well as provide oxygen (rightly selected indoor plants anyway). However, they can easily collect dust, pet dander, and other pollutants, as well as stimulate mold growth. To avoid this, simply try as much as possible to keep them outside the home, and keep the home well ventilated to get the needed oxygen.
