Best Neighbourhoods in Accra: Ofankor or Taifa?

It’s another Friday again and we interview two residents of Ofankor and Taifa. They tell us why their neighbourhoods are the best in Accra.

Ofankor

I love Ofankor. Prior to my move to Ofankor, I was living at Switch Back Road in Cantonments for a long time. It was quite difficult however, over the past six years in Ofankor, I have realized there are so many great and exciting things which makes living in the neighbourhood so nice.

Firstly, Ofankor is one of the most accessible places to live. No matter where you are in Accra or the time of the day, there is always a way of getting back home. When you travel from the Ashanti or Eastern Region, Ofankor is one of the first towns you get to in Accra which makes your journey even shorter. Ofankor serves as a link to many other towns like Sowutuom, Taifa, Dome, Amasaman and Pokuase.

There are so many schools in the neighbourhood, such as Silicon Valley International School, Ghanaian Child School, Mount Mary School and some public schools like the Anglican D.A.

I love Ofankor because no matter the location or time, you will find some warm food to buy. Normally in the mornings, there are kenkey, waakye and porridge. Close to my house, there is a bakery where we buy fresh pastries. In the night, you will get every kind of  food you want including kenkey and fish, waakye, pork or ‘domerdo’, banku and smoked fish etc.

People living in the neighbourhood are so friendly to the extent that they care about each other. Don’t be surprised when people ask you where you’ve been after you return from a trip. Whenever we organise events or parties, we get a lot of people from the neighbourhood attending.

Other people boasts of large hangouts in their neighbourhoods but there are so many smaller bars and pubs like Little Tokyo, Pleasure Gardens and Boaters where you can get drinks to buy at very affordable prices.

Taifa

Taifa is a densely populated area where people from all walks of life, ethnic groups and cultures can be found, thus making it a vibrant suburb. It is also one of the largest constituencies in Accra.

One popular hangout situated at Taifa Junction is Ofie Delight. Taifa is accessible by vehicles through Atomic Down, Dome, Haatso, Kwabenya, Ashongman, Circle and Accra.

For security, Taifa Police Station is situated some 50-80 meters from Taifa Burkina Junction. At night, they mount barriers on the stretch of the road from Taifa Junction and Taifa Post office, making the neighbourhood very safe.

As for my neighbours, they are friendly and down-to-earth. Other neighbourhoods complain of not knowing each other but in Taifa, the atmosphere is friendly and we know each other.
