We have all enjoyed the fireworks, countdowns, and some used this holiday season to observe religious traditions and crossover services. 2020 was a difficult year for many, so everyone has been looking forward to this New Year. Now that we are in 2021, here are some other Public holidays in Ghana we can look forward to this year.

1. Indepence Day
Saturday, 6 March 2021
This legal public occasion is commemorated on 6th March. On the off chance that sixth March falls on a weekend, as it does this year, the next Monday will be observed as the holiday. As such, Monday, 8th March, 2021 shall be observed as a holiday.
6th March is Ghana’s Independence Day and is observed in honour of Ghana’s freedom from the United Kingdom in 1957.
2. Good Friday
Friday, 2 April 2021
Good Friday is a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.
3. Easter Monday
Monday, 5 April 2021
Easter Monday is a Christian occasion commemorated the day after Easter Sunday which marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
4. Labour Day
Monday, 3 May, 2021
This international holiday is observed on 1st May. It is most commonly known as a commemoration of the achievements of the labour movement. The holiday may also be known as International Workers’ Day or May Day and is observed as a public holiday in over 80 countries.
5. Eid-ul Fitr
Likely 12 – 13 May, 2021
Eid-ul Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting, and is celebrated during the first three days of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar. The official date of this holiday in Ghana is not yet certain but we will update it as soon as the date is released.
6. Eid- ul Adhar
Likely 19- 20 July 2012
Eid-ul Adhar is an Islamic festival to commemorate the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim (also known in other scriptures as Abraham) to follow Allah’s (God’s) command to sacrifice his son.
7. Founders Day
Wednesday 4th August 2021
This statutory public holiday is observed on 4th August. If 4th August falls on a weekend, the following Monday will be observed as a holiday. Holidays in Ghana have that trend. Prior to the passing of the Public Holidays Amendment Bill into law in March 2019, the holiday on 21st September was known as Founder’s Day.
8. Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day
Tuesday, 21st September 2021
This public holiday is celebrated on 21st September. This holiday commemorates the birthday of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President and leader of the nation’s independence movement.
9. Farmers’ Day
Friday 3rd December 2021
National Farmers’ Day in Ghana is celebrated on the first Friday of December each year to recognise the contributions of farmers and fishers in the country. The holiday is designed to pay respect to the importance of the farming and fishing industry in the socio-economic growth of Ghana.
10. Christmas Day
December 25th 2020
On this day, over two billion people (over a third of the world’s population) will celebrate the birth of Christ.
Christmas Day celebrates the Nativity of Jesus which according to tradition took place on 25th December, 1 BC. 25th December is observed as a public holiday in many countries around the world. If 25 December falls on a weekend, then a nearby weekday may be taken as a holiday.
12. Boxing Day
Monday, 26 December 2021
This public holiday is celebrated on 26th December in several countries as part of the Christmas holidays. Typically, it will be moved and celebrated on the next working day if 26th December is a Saturday or Sunday.
It has been said that the name of Boxing Day comes from people getting rid of empty boxes from presents after Christmas day. The tradition dates back to England in the middle ages, though the exact origin is debatable.
One theory is that it comes from the fact that servants were given their presents in boxes on this day, the 26th being the first working day after Christmas day. This tradition of giving gifts for service extended beyond servants to tradesmen, such as milkmen, butchers, etc.

Commemorative Days
A commemoration is a ceremony that honors someone’s memory. A commemoration can also honor an event, like a war. A commemoration is a celebration of someone or something, usually in the form of a ceremony. Commemorations are often held on the anniversary of someone’s birth or death. African Union day, and Republic Day are commemorative days that are not public holidays in Ghana. They are observed by Ghana yet they are not taken as days off from work.
African Union Day – 25th May
Africa Day is the annual commemoration of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity on 25 May 1963. It is celebrated in various countries on the African continent, as well as around the world.
Republic Day – 1st July
People often ask “is 1st July, 2021 a holiday in Ghana”? Well, technically it is not a public holiday; but it is a commemorative day.
This day is commemorative in Ghana and is celebrated on 1st July. This holiday commemorates Ghana becoming a republic on 1 July, 1960.
Until 2019, Republic Day was a public holiday. Under the Public Holidays Amendment Bill which was passed in March 2019, Republic Day becomes a commemorative day.
