Accra Neighbourhood Watch: Teshie Nungua

Located near the shores of Ledzorkuku Krowor Municipal District is one of the most popular Ga towns – Teshie-Nungua. Teshie and Nungua are adjacent twin towns. For residential purposes, Teshie-Nungua is one of the most preferred choices for people living in Accra, due to its serenity, connection to the central business district and its wide range of home choices available.

History

Just like Labadi, Teshie and Nungua, are both old communities, close to the coast. Most of the indigenes are fisherfolks; the men go to fish while the women smoke the fish or sell them fresh on the markets. The locals mainly live in family homes, which have been in their families for generations. People living in such homes do not have to worry about rent charges since the homes are family-owned.

In Teshie-Nungua there are modern buildings, found mainly in a planned part of the Teshie-Nungua, known as the Estates. This is where a lot of prominent and well-to-do residents are found. Depending on a house-hunter’s choice, Teshie-Nungua can be a  desirable neighbourhood because the rent charges vary depending on the type of accommodation. Unlike certain neighbourhoods in the capital, one is likely to find both inexpensive and costly properties to rent.

Another reason that many house-hunters prefer Teshie-Nungua is its proximity to the Central Business District of Accra. On very good days, it takes a commuter only about 45 minutes to get to Accra.

The neighbourhood has all the basic amenities including water, electricity and a good road infrastructure. The major road links the community to Accra Central, Labadi and Tema. Another alternative route from Teshie-Nungua to other parts of Accra is the Spintex Road.

Security

One of the most secure neighbourhoods in Accra is Teshie-Nungua and this can be attributed to the police presence in each twin town. There are frequent patrols conducted by the men in uniform to ensure order in the neighbourhood.

Features

Parents also have the education of their children in mind while they are house-hunting. Teshie-Nungua has schools from the creche to secondary school level, including Kiddie Care and Saps School. Teshie Presbyterian Senior High School and Nungua Senior High provide secondary education to those living in the vicinity.

There are several places to relax in Teshie-Nungua. The beautiful beaches attract a lot of people to the neighbourhood, with hotspots such as Ramada Beach Resort and Coco Beach enticing people to relax on weekends and during holidays.

Grilled tilapia is the delicacy for most Ghanaians and Teshie- Nungua is the hub for this delicacy. There are different joints which serve this tasty meal of banku and tilapia. During the English Premier League season, Busy Mouth and Safeway Restaurant show live matches outdoors on large screens.

Teshie-Nungua is renowned for its unique coffin making trade. Coffin makers in Teshie produce the most unique coffins, which have caught the attention of both Ghanaians and people abroad due to their individual designs.
