Accra Neighbourhood Watch: Taifa

Taifa is a community in the Ga East Municipal District in the Greater Accra Region with neighbouring communities like Ofankor, Dome and Achimota. Taifa is the 26th largest settlement in Accra and one of the oldest neighbourhoods with quite a number of very posh buildings. Most people living in Taifa are migrants from other parts of the country with majority of them being Kwahus from the Eastern Region of Ghana.

A popular landmark in Taifa is the Kristo Asafo Reformed Church which was founded by Apostle Kwadwo Sarfo in 1971. The founder of Kristo Asafo has contributed a lot in areas of technology, business, agriculture, health and education.  His church is so popular to the extent that an entire neighbourhood is named after the church. The church established a clinic in 1987 to respond to the health needs of people living in the community treating common diseases using traditional healing methods in the clinic. The medical personnel cure diseases like stroke, malaria, diarrhoea, reproductive issues, skin problems and respiratory diseases. Taifa Private Hospital also serves the health needs of residents in the community.

There are interesting names for the various suburbs in Taifa including ‘Bankyiase,’ ‘Nkatee Burger,’ ‘Adjei,’ ‘Burkina’ and ‘Daavi’ etc. There is a lorry station which links Taifa to other places in Accra; residents get vehicles which ply Accra, Circle, Achimota and Madina. Taifa is an accessible route which links directly to Madina and Dome. The railway line from Nsawam in the Eastern Region to Accra Central, passes through Taifa, making it a transport option for residents.

The community has a large market for food stuff but most people have the perception that the prices of wares in the market is a little bit high because most residents of Taifa are seen as affluent and can afford them.

Taifa has a post office which is adjacent to two fuel stations. Security level is high because there is a police station  as well as neighbourhood watch dog committees which keep the community safe. Don’t be amazed if you meet police barriers at various points in Taifa when you are driving at night.

Popular eating joints in Taifa include Green Home Foods, Christol Decor and Catering Center, Spicy Ladle, Grand View Hotel. There are so many pubs and eating joints which serve the hunger needs of people living in the community. It’s quite a delight to see so much excitement in the neighbourhood especially at the end of very important games that involve the black stars.

There are a number of basic and senior high schools in the vicinity. Roman School, being run by the Catholic Church is a primary and junior high school, Ebenezer Preparatory and Junior High Schools is a primary and junior high school. Christ International Senior High provides both day and boarding facilities. St. Johns Grammar Senior High School is about five minutes drive from Taifa Junction.
